D Prime September 2026 Trading Volume Shifts as Markets Find Direction

D Prime September 2026 trading volume reached USD 120.55 billion, down 47.28% month on month as global markets moved away from the elevated activity seen in August’s high-volatility environment and into more directional trends.

The headline number fell sharply.

But September was not short on market moves.

The Fed delivered its first rate hike since 2023.

US Treasury yields climbed above 5%.

The dollar strengthened.

Oil surged as geopolitical tensions intensified.

Gold reversed lower.

Instead of volatility moving both ways, September increasingly became a market driven by direction.

• Total trading volume: USD 120.55B, down 47.28% month on month

• Average daily volume: USD 4.018B, down 45.53% month on month

• Top traded products: XAUUSD, NAS100, XTIUSD, GBPUSD, BTCUST

• Largest volume increase: NAS100, up approximately USD 103 million

• Fastest growth: FRA40, up 809.52%

D Prime recorded approximately USD 120.55 billion in total trading volume during September.

Average daily volume reached USD 4.018 billion, representing a 45.53% month-on-month decrease.

The decline followed the elevated trading activity seen in August, but it also reflected a change in market behaviour.

Rather than repeatedly reversing direction, major assets began developing stronger trends as monetary policy tightened and macro pressure built.

Monetary policy became one of September’s defining themes.

On September 16, the Federal Reserve raised the target range for the federal funds rate by 25 basis points to 3.75% to 4.00%, marking its first increase since 2023. The decision passed unanimously by a 12 to 0 vote.

The move followed weeks of shifting inflation and policy expectations. D Prime explored the forces behind that decision in US CPI Meets Forecasts, So Why Did Fed Still Hike?, including the role of sticky inflation, energy costs, and Treasury yields.

US nonfarm payrolls increased by 162,000 in August, significantly exceeding expectations.

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics confirmed the stronger payroll reading, while D Prime examined what it could mean for inflation and Fed policy in NFP Beats Expectations: Why Markets Are Still Waiting on CPI.

The 10-year US Treasury yield climbed above 5% and reached 5.31%, its highest level since 2007, while the US Dollar Index gained approximately 2% over the month.

Geopolitical tension remained another major driver.

The continuing US Iran conflict disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, while an attack on Saudi Arabia’s East West Pipeline led to a temporary shutdown.

Brent crude briefly moved above USD 109 per barrel and gained approximately 8% over the month.

Higher energy prices also pushed inflation expectations upward, reinforcing expectations that monetary policy could remain tighter for longer.

D Prime has previously examined why the Strait of Hormuz is such an important price trigger and how shipping chokepoints can amplify oil volatility in Why Oil Is 2026’s Most Volatile Trading Asset.

The volatility was enough to bring XTIUSD into D Prime’s top five traded products for the first time.

Gold was among the weaker major assets in September.

After briefly reaching a monthly high of USD 4,507 per ounce, gold moved lower as rate hike expectations strengthened alongside the US dollar and Treasury yields.

Prices fell to a monthly low of USD 4,115 per ounce on September 28 before closing near USD 4,157 per ounce.

That represented a monthly decline of around 6.7%.

China’s central bank increased its gold holdings by approximately 21 tonnes during the month, its largest monthly increase in nearly three years, providing some support on the downside.

Even with prices under pressure, XAUUSD remained D Prime’s top traded product, supported by continued volatility and active participation.

XAUUSD, NAS100, XTIUSD, GBPUSD, and BTCUST ranked among the top five products by trading volume.

The product mix shifted noticeably from August.

NAS100 climbed to second place and recorded the largest absolute increase in trading volume, rising by approximately USD 103 million. The Nasdaq 100 gained around 3.2% during the month, supported by strength in AI and semiconductor stocks.

At the same time, volatility in international crude oil pushed XTIUSD into the top five for the first time.

FRA40 stood out as September’s fastest-growing product, with monthly trading volume surging 809.52%.

September was not defined by the same kind of volatility seen in July or August.

The market changed character.

Rates moved higher.

The dollar strengthened.

Oil rallied.

Gold moved lower.

Equities became more selective.

Trading volume fell, but market direction became clearer.

That distinction matters.

Lower overall activity did not mean markets stopped moving. It meant traders were navigating a different environment, one shaped increasingly by stronger macro trends rather than constant reversals.

Looking ahead to October, the Federal Reserve’s policy meeting, the US midterm election cycle, and third-quarter earnings season will move into focus.

Markets will also continue to reassess the interest-rate path as geopolitical risks and energy prices remain elevated.

For traders, the question is whether September’s directional trends will continue or whether volatility begins to broaden again.

At D Prime, we continue to support traders with deep liquidity, reliable execution, and access to global markets as conditions evolve.

Because when market direction changes, staying adaptable matters.
